お燈まつり / Oto Matsuri

国の指定無形民俗文化財にも指定されているお燈まつりは、「上り子」と呼ばれる総勢2000人の男子が御神火が灯った松明を持って、神倉山の山頂から538段の石段を一斉に駆け下る火祭りです。女人禁制なので女性は上り子に参加することはできませんが、男性なら県外の方や観光客の方でも上り子に参加することができます。
The Oto Matsuri is a fire festival in which about 2,000 men called “Noboriko” run down 538 stone steps from the top of Mt. Kankura with torches lit by sacred fire. The festival is designated as an intangible folk cultural property by the national government. Women are not allowed to participate as Noboriko, but men from outside the prefecture or tourists can join them.
