ここ美波町大浜海岸はアカウミガメの産卵地として、国の天然記念物にも指定されています。
産卵上陸ピークは6月下旬～7月下旬にかけて最も多く、上陸する時間帯は20時～翌3時頃です。
他にも、たくさんのウミガメが飼育されている博物館「カレッタ」があるほか、ウミガメをモチーフにした看板やスイーツなどにも町のあちこちに点在します。
