天守閣からは、日本三大松原の一つの「虹ノ松原」が見渡せます。桜・藤の名所でもあり、夜になると天守がライトアップされ、その姿は幻想的な雰囲気を醸し出します。
城を要に砂浜が翼を広げた鶴のようにも見えることから「舞鶴城」ともいわれています。
