1368年(南北朝時代)に創建された、沖縄で現存する最古の寺院で、国王の祈願所でした。
ご本尊は聖観世音菩薩、宗派は高野山真言宗の寺院で、琉球真言宗の頂点に立つといわれています。
第二次世界大戦でほぼ壊滅しましたが、1947年頃から徐々に再建し、本堂、納骨堂、書院は1976年頃に建て替えらました。
It is the oldest existing temple in Okinawa, founded in 1368 (Nanbokucho period), and was a prayer place for the king. The main deity is Shokanzeon Bosatsu, and it is a temple of Koyasan Shingon sect, which is said to stand at the top of Ryukyu Shingon sect. It was almost destroyed by World War II, but it was gradually rebuilt from around 1947, and the main hall, bone hall, and shoin were rebuilt around 1976.
