水門から海水が入って堀の水かさは潮の干満で上下する水城で、高松城、今治城とともに日本三大水城の１つに数えられています。
高さ23m、5階5層の天守閣は、昭和39年に建設されたもので、城内には興味深い資料が展示され、一般に公開されています。
