本丸、二の丸、三の丸からなる宮崎県を代表する近世城郭です。城山には約300本の桜があり、花見の時期には夜桜が楽しめます。
城山には、日本三大ヤブツバキ群といわれているほどヤブツバキが自生しており、その数は108種、3,300本にも上ります。
