破魔弓祭 / Hamayumi (Demon-Exorcising Bow) Festival

麻ともち藁で編んだ直径60cm、重さ6kgの円座の「的」を、締め込み姿の若者達が境内や路上、そして最後には有明海の海中で激しく揉み合いながら奪い合う約860年の歴史を持つ迫力満点の男の祭りです。安土・桃山時代に氏子達がご利益を得ようと、ご神体を安置した円座を奪い合ったことが起源とされています。
その後、的は氏子の数だけ小さく分け、各家々の神棚に供え、無病息災・家内安全を願います。
This is a powerful men’s festival with a history of about 860 years, where young men in tight-fitting costumes fiercely wrestle with each other over a “target”, a 60cm diameter, 6kg weight seat made of hemp and rice straw, in the precincts, on the road, and finally in the Ariake Sea. It is said to have originated from the parishioners fighting over the seat where the sacred object was placed in order to receive divine grace during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Afterwards, the target is divided into smaller pieces according to the number of parishioners, and each family offers it to their household altar, praying for good health and safety.
