屋久島の森では標高500メートルを超えると杉林が見られます。屋久島の天然杉のうち齢1000年以上を屋久杉、1000年未満のものを小杉と呼んでいます。
スギとして日本で一番太い縄文杉は1966年発見されたもので、その姿を一目見ようと毎年たくさんの観光客が訪れます。
