薩摩国最古級を誇る寺院で伊豆横道三十三観音の24番礼所。
和銅元年(708年)元明天皇の勅願寺として創建されたと伝えられています。
隣接する泰平寺公園には「和睦石」が残っていて、寺の創建当時はこの公園の２０倍ほどの広大な敷地があったといわれています。
A temple that boasts the oldest class in Satsuma Province and is the 24th place of worship for Izu Yokomichi Thirty-three Kannon. It is said to have been founded as an imperial temple by Emperor Genmei in Wado (708). In the adjacent Taihei Temple Park, there is a “Wamoku Stone” that remains, and it is said that there was a vast site about 20 times larger than this park at the time of the temple’s founding.
