知覧は、太平洋戦争末期、陸軍の特攻基地が置かれた町で、人類史上類のない爆装した飛行機で敵艦に体当たりしていった陸軍特別攻撃隊員1,036名のの遺影、遺品、実際に使われた戦闘機などの記録等貴重な資料をおよそ5000点収集・保存・展示してあります。
