鹿の角きりは決して鹿を傷つけているわけではなく、発情期を迎えて気性が荒くなった雄の鹿が伸びた角で人間や他の鹿を傷つけないようにするために行います。この頃の鹿の角は血管や神経が通っていないため、人間が爪を切るように鹿に痛みはありません。鹿の角は古来から魔除けや水難から守ってくれるとの言い伝えがあり、切られた鹿の角で作られるアクセサリーは大人気です。
